Bike Saling

One of my absolute favorite things to do is to go saling. That was not a typo. I didn't mean sailing. I mean saling, sale-ing, or garage/rummage/estate saling. The old saying, one man's trash is another man (or woman's) treasure, is so very true. There are so many "treasures" to be found and I am convinced that one could literally find anything they want from saling if they are patient and persistent. Part of the fun is having a mission. Looking for a certain piece of furniture, clothing item, etc. and finding it can be really satisfying. For our family, saling is not only a means to an end, but is multipurpose, multifunctioning. It serves as an outing, family fun, togetherness, reusing/repurposing items and, of course, finding our bargains. There is a danger in this shopping, though. Once you get hooked, it is so hard to buy things from the store at full price. Plus, retail stores will not let you negotiate. Sometimes, making a purchase for one whole dollar is really painful at a sale. We live in such a wasteful society. Everything is buy and toss.

One of my projects this year was a little bike for my daughter. The bike worked really well but the paint was bleached out by the sun and it was a bit dirty. Of course, I feel like I can improve everything with "just a little paint". So, with just a little bit of elbow grease, whatever that means, I refinished the little bike. I removed all the old stickers, sanded down some of the rust, covered all the parts that I didn't want to be painted, and went to work. I'm pretty sure my husband has heard this phrase come out of my mouth more than a few times: "What if I spray paint it (insert color)"? It was a big hit. My little girl was so happy to have a purple bike that was her very own. All together, I think I spent around $5. (And, that's how we do Christmas!)
